Famous globally for its spaceship-like glass canopy and factory butterfly doors—which famously inspired the design of the McLaren F1—the Sera is a rare jewel within Philippine car culture. But decades of tropical humidity and wear had taken their toll on this particular unit. It arrived at our shop as a faded relic of the "bubble era."
When it rolled out, it was a futuristic masterpiece. This is the story of that incredible vehicle transformation at Batang Bodyworks.
The Vision: Honoring History, Pushing Boundaries
When the client first brought the car to our facility for Autobody Services in Makati, the mandate was clear: do not just restore it—reimagine it. The goal was to fuse classic JDM styling with modern, aggressive street culture.
To achieve this, we sourced a specialized aftermarket Toyota Sera body kit. In a market flooded with generic fiberglass paneling, finding a kit engineered specifically for the Sera's unique dimensions and complex door clearances was a challenge. But at Batang Bodyworks, we don’t compromise on sourcing the best body kits in the Philippines.
Step 1: The Trial of Craftsmanship
The true test of any elite garage isn't bolting parts together; it’s making those parts look like they were poured from the factory mold. Custom body kits for rare 90s vehicles are notorious for poor out-of-the-box fitment.
Our team spent days on precision mock-ups. Because the Sera’s doors swing up and outward, even a millimeter of misalignment on the front fenders or side skirts would cause catastrophic rubbing. Our technicians meticulously shaved, reinforced, and heat-molded the panels. It required old-school craftsmanship—feeling the body lines by hand to ensure symmetrical gaps and flawless aerodynamic flow.
We also subtly massaged the rear arches. While not as extreme as our full-scale widebody builds, we gave the Sera a wider, more planted stance to accommodate a set of period-correct, deep-dish JDM wheels.
Step 2: The Art of the Finish
With the bodywork sitting flawlessly, the conversation turned to the exterior skin. In modern car culture, the debate between paint and wraps is fierce. For this build, the owner wanted a permanent, deep, liquid-like finish that a vinyl wrap simply couldn't replicate.
We selected a custom multi-stage Midnight Pearl paint.

Under the bright streetlights of BGC or the intense Philippine sun, the paint explodes into deep hues of violet and metallic blue.
Our painters applied multiple layers of high-solid clear coat, followed by a week of wet-sanding and rotary polishing. The result was a mirror finish, completely free of orange peel, designed to withstand the harsh local climate.
The Reveal: A Masterpiece Reborn
The day the owner came to pick up the car, the garage was quiet. When we pushed the button to activate the shop’s hydraulic lift and the Sera lowered to the ground, its butterfly doors smoothly swung upward into the air. The transformation was total.
